Bite of Reality is a hands-on simulation that gives high school and college students a taste of making real world financial decisions that adults face every day such as paying off student loans and credit cards and paying for basic necessities like groceries, utilities, housing, clothing, and child care.
What to expect:
- Via an app on the participants’ smartphones, they’ll receive a fictional occupation, family, income, and various debts. Then, make “purchases” from various stores from mock “pushy” salespeople. If they overspend, there’s a credit union station to help them out.
- Participants are faced with challenging decisions as they learn that their income may not always align with their desired lifestyle.
- Participants can modify their decisions and make mistakes, see the consequences of their decisions in a realistic, but safe environment.
- After completing a Bite of Reality event, participants understand how easy it can be to overspend, and learn to modify their spending habits to save for the future.
